Recognition for Marja-Kristiina Lerkkanen’s textbook production
The Association of Finnish Nonfiction Writers describes Lerkkanen as an exceptionally active writer. In addition to her extensive scientific accomplishments, she has published numerous learning materials on reading and writing skills as well as assessment materials, and thereby bringing research-based knowledge into practice in an outstanding fashion.
“Lerkkanen’s textbook production is closely intertwined with reading and writing skills, and this work is invaluable for the entire Finnish society”, the award statement points out.
In her research, Marja-Kristiina Lerkkanen specialises in interaction in pre-primary and comprehensive school education as well as home environments, the development of literacy skills, and issues of learning motivation. As a member of working groups, she has authored editions such as Apilatien aapinen (Sanoma Pro) and Pikkumetsän esiopetus (Sanoma Pro), along with related exercise and reading books and teacher’s guides.
Lerkkanen has also contributed to the writing of highly necessary and widely used ARMI assessment materials on reading and writing skills for class and special education teachers (Sanoma Pro), and a corresponding book for lower secondary school, the YKÄ assessment method for reading and writing skills (Niilo Mäki Institute). Many teachers and teacher students have read Lerkkanen’s textbook on learning and teaching reading in pre-primary and primary education, Lukemaan oppiminen ja opettaminen esikoulussa ja alkuopetuksessa (Sanoma Pro). The book integrates theoretical knowledge and practical hints into a comprehensive package of information.
The monetary value of the Textbook Writers’ Award granted by the Association of Finnish Nonfiction Writers is 8,000 euros.
