Travel report: The Finnish Formula: Play, Learn, Excel
"On 15 October, I had the honour of speaking at 'The Finnish Formula: Play, Learn, Excel,' an event co-hosted by the National Children’s Museum and the Embassy of Finland in the U.S., Washington, D.C. This gathering was part of the Museum’s President’s Circle series, and the topic was something I care about deeply: the role and power of play in learning and the principles behind Finland’s high-quality education system.
Being invited as a representative of EDUCA flagship to this panel was a wonderful opportunity – not only to share my research but also to connect with others who believe that early childhood education should be joyful, inclusive, and empowering.
The conversation, moderated by Kiryn Hoffman, was inspiring and thought-provoking. Together, we explored how play-based learning builds strong foundations for academic success and well-being – and why these ideas matter now more than ever.
I was joined by three incredible colleagues. Dr Kathy Hirsh-Pasek (Temple University College of Liberal Arts), an expert in playful learning, whose passion for bridging science, classroom practice, and informal learning environments was truly inspiring. Vanessa Speigle (Ambassador of CCE Finland), who showcased a practical toolbox for helping families adopt Finnish pedagogical principles. And most of all, I was delighted to meet my Finnish colleague Iida-Maria Peltomaa (Arctic Education), who introduced Arctic Education’s story-driven approach to ICT learning with minimal screen time – a refreshing perspective in today’s digital world! Sometimes you need to travel far to discover inspiring colleagues from your own neighbourhood.
During the panel, I spoke about my work at the University of Helsinki, where I focus on inclusive learning and creative, collaborative teaching methods. I shared insights from my recent research on collaborative problem-solving among young learners and pedagogical approaches to explain complex topics like AI to young children. And yes, when you have the chance to highlight your latest research, you take it! I introduced MathBuzz – Math through Movement, Play, and Exploration, our newest project that brings families, educators, and children together to make maths playful and meaningful. Across all these areas, my goal is simple: to empower children as active participants in their own learning – because when children feel agency, they thrive.
The panel wasn’t just about talking – it was about playing and moving. We experienced firsthand how creativity and collaboration transform learning. Watching adults engage in playful activities reminded me that learning through play isn’t just for children – it’s for all of us. Also, listening to these experts reinforced why I’m so passionate about education: it’s not just about grades – it’s about nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
I’m deeply grateful to the Embassy of Finland for hosting us, to Reima for supporting the event, and to the National Children’s Museum for creating spaces where these conversations – and playful experiences – can flourish."
